Climate change has been a topic talked about in the experts circles for years. It is not new and yet it is now become very necessary to do something about it as we race towards increase in global temperatures affecting all species on this planet including mankind.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (the Convention or UNFCCC) is an international treaty which acknowledges the existence of anthropogenic climate change and provides the framework for climate change negotiations. The Convention was adopted in 1992 during the ‘Earth Summit’ in Rio de Janeiro, with the treaty entering into force in 1994 and 196 countries ratifying it. The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the supreme decision-making body of the UNFCCC and is made up of representatives from all parties.
The recently concluded COP 27 at Sharm-el-Sheikh (Egypt) achieved some important milestones and decisions on combating climate change. Although much work must be done at country level organisations for combating this change, individuals and small organisations can play their part in this. Achieving Carbon-Net Zero target will help reduce the GHG emissions which indirectly will control the effect of Global warming and help save the Bio-diversity and other major impacts from occurring on this earth.
